Stunning 100% Cut in State Funding of DV Shelters

CAROL'S HOUSE IMPACTED

July 28, 2009 - Line-item veto eliminates 100% of domestic violence funding through the state of California.  CRC was prepared for state budget cuts, but none of the 94 shelters statewide anticipated the unprecedented complete elimination of funding for life-saving programs.  Carol’s House itself will lose nearly 50% of its operating budget with state withdrawal of support.

Ways you can help

1.  Urge your state legislators to reverse this unprecedented line item veto.  Lives are at stake.  Sample statement:  “As a citizen and voter in your district, I urge you to reinstate California state funding to domestic violence shelters.  The preventive and life-saving role of this shelter funding is critical.  Elimination of this funding will endanger the lives of women and children.  Community costs of dealing with the aftermath of domestic violence crimes statewide will cost exponentially more than state funding of shelters that protect abuse victims from reoccurrence of those crimes.”

2.  Please recommend Carol's House support to your employers, foundations, and organizations.  CRC is actively seeking $200K in replacement domestic violence shelter funding so that we may continue to serve abused women and children who will have nowhere else to turn.  Lives are at stake.

Carol’s House
In 2004, CRC opened Carol’s House, a 24-bed emergency shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Carol’s House provides more than just a safe living environment. Residents also receive comprehensive social services to facilitate transition to healthier, happier, and safer lives. Each resident receives case management, counseling, group therapy, free legal advocacy, as well as parenting and life skills classes. The ultimate goal is to give Carol’s House clients the tools and opportunities needed to restart their lives and continue on a path of self-sufficiency.

How Carol’s House Was Built
Community Resource Center effectively managed a domestic violence shelter prior to building Carol’s House, but could only provide sanctuary to 12 clients at a time. Carol Cianfarani, one of our supporters, envisioned a larger facility that provided women and children with a home-like environment. Through Prudential Realty and Pickford Realty Cares, Carol spearheaded the effort to create a shelter at Community Resource Center with double the capacity. Thanks to her vision and efforts, over $150,000 was raised to help build Carol’s House.

HomeAid San Diego, a non-profit organization dedicated to building hope and homes for San Diego’s temporarily homeless, joined the project and created a team of builders to make Carol’s House a reality. With Shea Homes taking the lead as building captain, and with the help of dozens of contractors, Carol’s House was built with extraordinary speed and at minimal cost to Community Resource Center.
